@Anonymous You need to turn off mobile data and use TuGo over Wifi to text or phone home. If you don't, you will incur roaming charges, which will be very expensive.

You don't have to do anything.
Your phone will connect to a local network when you arrive but please note the charges as listed here http://www.o2.co.uk/international/internationalhub

Just a warning if you have signed up to the o2 Travel service on pay monthly. Even if you don't intend to use your data in the States (and even don't turn on data roaming on your phone), the second you send your first text back home, you will be charged the £4.99 daily fee. I assumed the o2 Travel service was a data-orientated service and £1.99 per day in Europe was fine. But as it also includes a daily text allowance, as soon as you send a text, o2 charges you. Those were very expensive text messages that week. Fortunately, they've agreed to refund 50% of the charges I incurred.

The other alternative is to make sure your phone is unlocked and get a Three Pay & Go sim and take the Feel At Home add-on.
