Friend just returned home to Canada, what is cheapest way to message them...friends international seems to only refer to calls not messages??

Cheapest and best way is for you both to install Whatsapp which is a free message/voicemail service over wifi anywhere in the world : http://www.whatsapp.com/download/

There are other messaging apps but this is my preferred option.

There are no international message bolt ons through O2 so standard texts to Canada would be 20p if your friend is on a Canadian network.
