Hi. My son just upgraded to the 11 from an x. I’m having it instead of my 8 which still has 6 months left on contract. Can I transfer the insurance from my 8 to the spare iPhone x

You'll need to call customer service to give them the details of the new phone to check, however, I don't think it is transferable.
You might find it cheaper to shop around too.
