You'll need to check your phone will work abroad as well, some of the models don't work in the US. What phone do you have?

You can check here for the current calling rates http://international.o2.co.uk/internationaltariffs/travelling_abroad

I would suggest using a local sim card and wifi when and where possible.

O2 Payg : http://international.o2.co.uk/internationaltariffs/travelling_abroad

You can unlock your phone if its currently locked to o2 T&C apply.

Your phone should connect automatically for calls and texts but data roaming is required to be turned on if you wish to use data services.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

It will be very costly to use your O2 PAYG in New York. You will be much better off getting a PAYG sim locally from T-Mobile or AT&T.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

You can check in My O2 to see if you have O3 Travel. I know this is for Europe but if you have that then the phone will work in the USA as long as you have a tri-band phone.
