Hi, I had a call from a number yesterday that I don't recognise.  I noticed this morning that my phone sent a text after this number called - "I'm on my way."

 

I never sent this text.  All I can imagine is that an app on my phone has perhaps done this.

 

I tried to get through to someone at o2, but there isn't an option available to report this to them.  What I fear is, knowing how hackers and scam artists operate, I'm worried I might get a whopping great fine on my bill for texting that number or the phone faking a reply to that phone call or somesuch.

 

I'm just wondering what to do next and who to report this to.  For one, I want to make sure I don't end up getting billed for whatever went down which is why I want to inform someone at o2 that it wasn't me sending out texts.

Thanks for all your help, I clicked on one of those links that sent me to an o2 live chat where they were able to investigate and sort this out for me.  They informed me I haven't been billed for the text and that I can get it refunded if it appears on my bill.

If you are using an Android phone it's advisable to run a Play Protect scan (Can be done through the app store) but also as a secondary measure to download and install temporarily something like Malwarebytes and allow it to scan your phone.

 

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.malwarebytes.antimalware (you don't need to buy it)

 

While restricting app installation to the Play Store doesn't guarantee you'll never get a malicious app installed it is somewhat safer than sideloading apk files yourself (if you don't know what I'm on about you've never done it)
