So having gone through the process today I can confirm how it works.
You get a card from O2 with your qualifying purchase or upgrade. The card contains a scratch off panel which reveals a code.
You download the popcorn app from here after the registration process is completed https://www.popcornpass.co.uk/redeem-code/o2
All tickets must be purchased through the app and are then stored on your phone to show upon arrival at your chosen cinema.
Savings of 40% on ticket prices so well worth having Smiley Happy
