My gate entry system is on 2G and stopped working on 4th June. It was sold to me in March 2018, so it appears I was sold a near obsolete system that I am now told needs upgrading to 4G to get it to work again, at a cost of £400-500. Has anyone had a similar experience?

2G will be around for a long while yet as LPWAN (Low Powered Wide Area Networks) IOT (Internet of Things) devices such as smart meters use it to send data.
I am surprised a gate entry system in 2018 is 2G only, Is it a PAYG sim or a Pay Monthly sim card?
But it is one for the supplier, and nothing to do with o2.
I do not work for o2 or any VMo2 /Telefonica/Liberty Global Company

O2 recently made some system changes at the beginning of April which rendered some older sim cards useless.
It may be worth you trying a new sim first before paying out for a new system.
