O2 mailbox full - mail is not bounced back

Anonymous
Not applicable

When an o2.co.uk mailbox becomes full, a message appears in the mailbox:

"Your mailbox is full! It is currently over its allowed capacity. As of now, incoming messages can no longer be received, and they are being returned to the sender indicating your mailbox is full."

Unfortunately, messages are not returned to the sender as they should be. This is a problem since a lot of mailboxes will be shrinking significantly as people are migrated to Sky.

Hi guys,

So I've looked into the 'Email full' bounce back email topic and this isn't actually a feature that is used in O2 webmail. So webmail members are told that they're inbox is full, but the sender of a message to a webmail account will not receive a notification. As the service will soon be closing, its unlikely that this will be added in the short time until then.

I hope that clears it up!

This is going to cause a lot of problems for people who haven't yet migrated their accounts to another provider. If people think their sent emails are reaching the recipient it could have awful consequences for both parties.

No, I don't really use O2 email, but I thought it's important to make this bug public.

Certainly is.

@Anonymous flagged it to @Toby so it can be.

Of course I have no way of knowing how long this issue has gone on for. There have been lots of people with 20 MB mailboxes over the years irrespective of the current migration, and anyone using webmail or a POP3 client set to leave their messages on the server would eventually cease to receive email, whilst the sender would assume that the email has been successfully delivered.

The one "saving grace" is the "mailbox full" warning email which is sent out to the mailbox owner, which hopefully would have prompted them to take action before the mailbox started to lose emails, although as I say the email is incorrect in saying messages are returned to sender.

Hey Oliver,

Thanks for posting about this, I'll pass it on to the team now to see if anything can be amended.

Also, thanks to BoB for PMing me about this.

Hi Oliver,

To see if we can sort this out, can you clarify if its that the sender (to your O2 email) doesn't get the message bounced back, or that they are not told the recipient inbox is full? (i.e. the person sending an email to your O2 mailbox don’t get a “mailbox full” undelivered message back. So they never know if the message was not delivered and likewise the O2 webmail recipient doesn't know that they've missed an email from someone?)

This'll help us to investigate.

Correct.

  • Mailbox full
  • Receipient does not get the mail because mailbox full
  • Sender gets no notification that the email was not delivered
