No Mobile Data in Rome, Italy

I purchased an extra mobile data bolt-on for use when travelling in Rome last week, however when I connected to the only working network provider I WIND, I had no mobile data.

I rebooted, changed the settings and even went through a lengthy chat with an O2 Guru while on the hotel wi-fi... all to no avail - no mobile data in Italy's capital city.

I could not use Google Maps to find the places we wanted to and could not post photos.

Rediculous.

Surely, this cannot be right?!

It was not just me, my partner travelling with me had no mobile data either.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Why should I pay for my O2 Travel and Mobile Data bolt-on?!

Paul

PS: yes, as soon as we landed back in London, mobile data was working... so not the fault of the phone.

Yes, we went to Spain with these phones last summer and the mobile data worked "out of the box" - I didn't even need to change the settings! We were told by an O2 Guru on the hotel wifi chat that in Rome we need to select 3G... so we did... but no mobile data 😞

No 4g in your area then.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

In Spain 4g is all over the place...but I know I wouldn't get it due to no 4G roaming agreement...

It all depends on the network partner, and how they have their network configured as well as the handset.

Your handset will always try to connect to 4G (LTE) networks first, as this is the priority on both the handset and the sim card.

What error did you get when trying to connect to TIM or Voda IT?

on none o2/ Telefonica networks this process isnt always automatic, so you have to do it manually by selecting 3G/2G so the handset knows not to look and lock onto a 4G Signal.

When on a Telefonica Home network, such as Movistar / o2-de and o2-pl as examples the network and handset know automatically to step down to 3G (This isnt 100% as it sometimes needs a push)...  I had this is Germany over the weekend where my iPhone didnt need anything changing but just stepped down on o2-de to 3G speeds...

I just wish o2 would hurry up and get 4G roaming switched on, its the biggest pain for those like me who roam a lot...

That would mean they'd have to pay more which will never happen.

Agreed but only to none Telefonica Networks.. However having tested 3's and Voda's 4G roaming in some parts of the world im not surprised o2 dont offer it as its worse than EDGE or GPRS speeds... which is saying something...

I can't speak for Voda but I have had good experiences with Three in their "Feel at Home" countries.
