Missed calls from numbers who haven't rung

Yesterday I received a phone call from a local number, I missed this call so called it back. The person I rang was a residential address and she said she had not called me.

This has happened before. Is it possible for someone to call and mask themselves as a different number without their knowledge?

@catrinhollings Yes it's very possible. It's called 'Spoofing', and it's becoming a big problem. Take a look at these links:
