Lost saved data

Hi I just wondered if anyone can help with this query from my mother in law. Basically she got a new phone and there was an issue when she transferred the data over and she has lost some saved messages and a couple of photos of her late husband. I’ve looked on the cloud and nothing there. Is there any way to retrieve the messages? She’s very upset and this is a last resort to ask on here. Thank you in advance

What phone?

If it's an iPhone, she can make a full backup to iCloud from her old phone and restore this to the new one.

If android, photos should be backed up to Google photos but messages will be lost if not separately backed up.
