Hi @Anonymous.
This is not o2 customer service.
If you want to cancel your contract then please follow the below guide:
https://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Pay-Monthly-and-Pay-Go/How-To-Cancelling-Your-Contract-A-Guide/m-p/566774/highlight/true#M56526
You may also want to consider unlocking your phone to use a SIM from a different company:

I kind of doubt it, but was hoping that an email notification might trigger a response...

I’m afraid you may have left this far too late but call customer service urgently on 202 as there may be cancellation fees to pay too.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
Please select the post that helped you best and mark as the solution. This helps other members in resolving their issues faster. Thank you.

I don't understand how people can leave something like this to the last minute and think a simple email will suffice.

@Anonymous please do not cancel your direct debit yet. If you intend returning to the UK you could have big problems obtaining credit.
