I am trying to claim my free tablet as per the offer. However the link is giving a message that the IMEI no may come back invalid, I am reluctant to try just in case it does. I've emailed o2 but had no response in over a week. Can anybody help

If it fails, @Martin-O2 will be able to help, but only if there is an actual issue.
