I save the photos from my phone to disk at the local photo shop
it comes with a small thumbnail foto pix as an index of what's on disk
I'd like to transfer what's on disks (5 no. ish) to my laptop
I know nothing about the above at all
anyone help, I'd be grateful]

Apart fro MI5's method which I use another way may be simpler for you.
When you insert the disk you should get a pop-up window with various methods of saving or viewing the photos on the disc. Choose the easiest for you.

thank you jonsie
I've decided to go with the method you suggest as it sounds simpler for me
on my laptop screen only Dropbox came up = so I've gone with that
& imported the the photos from disc to screen
how do I 'file' this particular group of photos on my laptop?
I already have a 'filename' for them

@MI5 + @jonsie + @adamtemp64
1: I need to have a filename before I dare take disc no.1 out of the slot in my laptop
& before repeating the process with other discs
2: I would like to know how to do a 'rollover' of photos full-size on the laptop screen
BUT, do I mark my initial question solved
& continue asking the above questions on 2 separate threads

photos from disc number 1 onto laptop & viewed by me
really enjoyed looking at photos albeit in 'index size ' form
1: how do I file this particular group of photos from this 1st disc = filename I want to use is 2009/10 for whole lot of the photos
2: how do I get the photos to rollover on the laptop screen at full screen size
3: can I take disc1 out of disc slot on my laptop now photos from disc1 have been imported into Dropbox system
4: how do I back-up the photos ..... ..... ..... when my lad set the laptop up for me a few years ago = well he told me it will automatically back-up every week ..... ..... ..... does this automatic back-up system apply to photos on Dropbox
5: & can these questions be held under the umbrella of the original thread title ie 'Help: photos on disc to laptop'
sorry for any confusion
please ask up if I can clarify any more

This may look a little different to you as I have a different version of Windows, but the process is the same.
Put your disc in the Laptop and click on My Computer from your desktop.
You should then see this:
Click on DVD drive and a new window will appear showing all photos as thumbnails.
In Win7 you will find the menu options under "Organise"
1 - Click Select All
2 - Click Copy
3 - Click the folder you want the photos to go into (if you want it called 2009/10 just right click on your pictures folder and select New >Folder then call it 2009/10)
4 - Click Paste
All the photos will then be copied to your folder on Laptop and you can double click on them to view full screen.
