Charged for sending a message on Kik

I just received a text saying I had been charged 46p for sending a message on kik. Why is this? The message was 3 words long no emoticons.

@Shaun72 you'd have to ask KiK why the message was chargeable.
O2 would only charge you if it was sent over the network as an MMS message.

My understanding is that Kik uses data much like WhatsApp and other messaging apps do and this shouldn’t attract charges if you are within your data allowance
