Yesterday I received several spam messages and since then my main o2 webmail hasn't been working. When I try (my usual way) to download my email through thunderbird it says "message store is unavailable" and when I log into webmail via the o2 web site it gives an error message.
Bizarrely I have another o2 webmail account and it's working fine.

thanks for the phone numbers...
After several failed attempts I eventually got the o2 helpdesk to raise a ticket to unlock my webmail, they said it would take up to 5 days.
However 9 days later I'm still locked out of my mailbox, and very aware that I still need to recover things off it before the service is closed for good at the end of the month.

12 days on I'm definitely getting the feeling that O2 webmail support is ignoring me, with the knowledge that in 2 weeks there won't be anything to restore.
This is very frustrating, as after 15 years with O2 I have a lot of membership, banking and shopping websites linked to my O2 account, and I am struggling to transition them to a new email without access to the O2 account.

You need to keep ringing and pushing them till someone actually takes control of the problem and gets it resolved. Like you say in 2 weeks time it will be too late and anything stored in there will be lost.

True, but you can't speak to the webmail support people directly, only raise tickets with the call centre (who are very understanding) but sadly doesn't seem to progress the issue with the webmail as the webmail people seem to be ignoring them.

This is getting silly, O2 must be aware they haven't allowed enough time to close this down and many of their customers will have this problem.
