I am going to America next week and would like to take my mobile with me, is there an extra charge for this?

If you use your O2 sim in the US you will come back to a very large bill. It really isn't a good idea. I travel frequently to the US and use a local sim when I'm there.
Unlock your phone, if it isn't already, and use a local sim from T-Mobile or AT&T. Alternatively, there are international sims you can get before you go that have different amounts you can buy, depending on how long you are going to be there. You can use Google to find one that would suit you.
If you must use your O2 sim and you are a Pay Monthly customer, download the TuGo app and use that over WiFi whenever you can. This will enable you to use your UK allowance for calls and texts, but only over WiFi. Using mobile data on your O2 sim will be very expensive, and is not advisable.

Hi @Anonymous and a warm welcome to the Community Forum,
Yes their will be roaming charges.
Try to use Wifi when and where possible.
Turn Mobile data off within your phones settings.
Turn off O2 Voicemail before you leave the Uk.
O2's Tugo service is another option too if your on Pay Monthly.
