O2 when abroad - voicemail doesn't work!!

I travel a lot, and for the past 5years have a lot of trouble with O2 abroad. Voicemail doesn't work well. At the moment, I can see I have $85 credit on my account, but am unable to make calls or access voicemail! It's really limiting my ability to work, speak with family etc. customer service is very limited, and if your abroad often means calling at ridiculous hours of the night when they're open. Don't use 02 if you plan on travelling.

Have you tried setting a voicemail pin to access emails from a different phone, just to see if that works?
Also, does it work in some countries and not others, if so, which ones?

If in credit are you pay as you go? Have you had all roaming bars lifted ?
