Hi

Is it possible for your mom to test the simcard in another phone to see if the sim or the phone itself is faulty?

Have yoy checked if there is a mast near your moms? http://status.o2.co.uk/

Sometimes just removing and replacing the sim in the phone can fix it, but if not you need to narrow it down to phone, sim or network.
Once you know that we can advise further......

Were the other phones unlocked to the O2 network?
Did you check the signal status on the postcode checker ?
