I have received text messages on my O2 mobile hotspot - can anyone tell me how to access them please

as far as I can remember you log in to the device or use the software it installs on a pc / laptop but I never received any during my trail

there is an envelope symbol on the screen and according to the manual it is for messages and when I log in ther is a status bar with the envelope and a number two at the side of it but you can't click on it
