thanks for getting back to me. my son came up with a solution. as I am pretty sad and have few contacts (the vast majority of contact is from wife or O2) He suggested writing names and numbers on a sheet of paper and manually entering them into daughters old iPhone. bit old school but hey ho!

How to copy contacts from your SIM card to your mobile phone and vice versa
You can copy your contacts from your SIM card to your mobile phone and vice versa. If you change your SIM card or mobile phone, you will not lose your contacts.
1.
Find "settings"
Press People.
Press the dots in the bottom right corner of the display.
Press settings.
2.
Copy contacts between mobile phone and SIM card
Press import SIM contacts.
3.
Return to the Home screen
Press the Home key to end the session and return to the Home screen.

Try this and hopefully it will work.

Are you switching to another Lumia or windows based phone? If so, all your contacts will be backed up to your Skydrive so you don't need to transfer them to your sim.
If you are moving to an Android phone you can sync your contacts with your GMail account and again they will be available on the new phone as soon as you log in.

Copying contacts to your sim card will only transfer a limited amount of info so you may lose some detail from your contacts list.

Haha, if you had numerous contacts, saving to Gmail and exporting them as a .vcf file which can then be imported into iTunes would have been another option wink
