Was this live chat. Once you pay off the handset (Refresh) you can either take out another contract or a sim only. Not sure why you were told otherwise.

that's what I thought but he insisted I couldn't change to sim only until the upgrade date. But he didn't answer my main question which was are the sim only deals fixed in stone because vodafone's deals are cheaper for what I need?

You may get a discount or loyalty bonus but only by speaking to retentions, ie. call 202 and choose the option for leaving.

As far as the deals being fixed, yes they are, ie you can't swap minutes for more data or anything like that.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Pixel 7a (O2 & Lyca), One Plus 6 (Sfr), iPhone 12 Pro Max (Vodafone)

@Anonymous A good deal is only as good as the coverage you get from the network offering it.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

@Anonymous Always go with the deal that suits you but check out other networks signal using payg cards before committing to any contract

i've had a vodafone sim in my sons old lumia 640 for the last 2 weeks carrying it with me to see how their network is! and its about the same sometimes it's better sometimes O2's better But never lost signal on either phones. so looks like it's off to vodafone for me! £5 a month adds up over time. thanks everyone for taking time to  respond much appreciated.
