Diconnect from internet Nokia Asha 300

Live chat unable to help and assure me that when the boxed G or boxed E symbol appears next to the battery life indicator, it mereley means that an interrnet connection is open and that I am not using any data.  However, I have not been using the internet on the mobile, yet checking my account data is being used!    I think  it may be useful to keep option to connect but want to do this at my choice not randomly connecting as this phone seems to do.  Just upgraded from same phone - didn't have this problem with previous. Can anyone advise how to disconnet from internet on Nokia Asha 300 when internet use not required?

Much appreciated

Thank you for the explanation - makes sense (though I do not know what app, or other) may be needing to update on a daily basis, (I have not installed/downloaded any apps) . Pity the online O2 guru could not explain this to me. Don't fully understand why it is doing it on new phone, and did not do this on previous phone same phone/model - just a different colour? Thank you once again

I'm guessing as it's a newer phone it will have newer firmware on it which Nokia have altered slightly and the previous option of turning data off has been removed. Doesn't make sense to me but must do to someone at Nokia wink
