..... is there a way to close off a facebook 'account'
I ask, not for myself, but for a good friend of mine, who for family reasons has recently joined fb
a relative did the registration for him
& he is really, really not happy with the whole thing of fb
it has actually upset him very much
the relative did the registration to rather 'show off'
thank you for reading this post

Yes Jane...You can go in and deactivate your account......
Another way is to just leave it dormant. Dont post...dont log in ...and no one will bother to post on it....

The only surefire way to be rid of it is to entirely delete your account. I think by law, Facebook has to retain your data for so long although they can not use it anyway other than mechanical storage. After so long your data should be destroyed, purged and lost in digital heaven.
Deactivation only hides you from the public however it does serve the purpose as a temporary fix to a problem where privacy is a concern.

Facebook is OK depending on your privacy settings but the real problem is that people tend to post all sorts of information such as when going on holiday. House breakers delight for some. I fully expect to have to re lay the landmines and reset the shotguns when/if I get back.
As for forums, yes there different problems. There is little information available to be used by anyone apart from general stuff we reveal about ourselves The good thing is you find likeminded people who share common interests though over a period of time perhaps we reveal too much. Truth will always out in the end.
