Why Do We Change Our Clocks?

I have always thought it was strange that the clocks go forward and back every year.  I find it pointless.  I can understand if it goes back one year and forward the next, but why confuse people by changing it?

Last night I knew they were going back, but this morning I forgot and wondered why my phone and clock had 2 different times on them.

Anyway, my main question is - why do they change?

I have Googled this many times but I can't find an answer that I understand.

Do other countries do it or is it just the UK?

Thank you for that information @Huntress

So if it is 11:00am here in the UK now, is that the time it is meant to be?

Re the Spain issue...it is doubly confusing if you are flying on a day of clock change...because as we know...we but them forward an hour at any time of the year when flying....

In my apartment block there was a notice up in reception about the clock change...A lot of English first time visitors could not understand it...Smiley Very Happy

So....did everyone wait till 2.00am to change their clocks, wait till this morning or, like me changed them all at around 10pm last night?

3 wallclocks, one photoframe clock, vcr clock, music centre clock, central heating clock, microwave clock, three watches, outside light timer, printer clock, 2 bedside clocks and car clock! My phones magically changed themselves LOL

No, but it was fun to watch the EPG show the start time and finish time the same for a 1 hour programme Grumpy

I generally change my clock if it's broken or I fancy a new style.
