Hey everyone,

Today is International Left handers Day! Left-handed people have had a rough time over the years with Left handers routinely accused of consorting with the devil in the middle ages and favouring the left could be used as evidance of witch craft.

During the 18th and 19th century left handed  children were often forced to use their right hand, often under the threat of punishment for anyone caught using the left and left handedness was considered a mark of pathological behaviour, savagery and criminality during this time.

Things got a lot better in the 20th century but left handers still suffered from discrimination and we're considered   stubborn and willful as well as awkward and clumsy.

These days left handers no longer suffer much discrimination and there are a massive number of products adapted for those who favour the left!

Here are a few fun facts about left handed people.

  • They make up roughly 12% of the population
  • Adjust to seeing underwater quicker
  • More likely to pursue creative careers
  • Make especially good baseball players, tennis players, swimmers, boxers and fencers (almost 40% of the top tennis players are lefties)
  • On a QWERTY keyboard there are 1447 English words typed solely with the left hand, whilst only 187 are typed with the right hand.
  • Better at multi-tasking
  • Use the right side of the brain the most
  • Many people who are left-handed draw figures that face to the right
  • Research suggests that left-handers are slightly more prone to allergies and asthma than right-handers are

Seems to me there is an International Day for everything @Martin-O2 wink

Having said that, I would like to see the research which suggests that left-handers are slightly more prone to allergies and asthma than right-handers are? confused

I've never heard of that before....
