No googling, wiki, youtube search for answers.

As usual, there is one QI-style question, where the answer is not what most people assume.

I have tried to make this quiz a fair balance of questions, although one question may prove tricky.

This quiz - as are all White Room Thursday Quizzes - are open to all members.

I hope those who have taken part in a previous White Room Thursday Quiz will take part, and that new members, and those who have not previously played, will join in.

Please feel free to post any comments on the questions - but not the answers - on this thread.

If you have any questions about the quiz, please ask and I will reply here.

Thank you everyone for your interest.

I hope everyone enjoys this People`s Choice edition of the White Room Thursday Quiz.

All of them caught me out @Mi-Amigo  rofl I was sure I got the gelatin question right. Fish bladders! I wonder where they use that. nerd

I actually almost chose the space category but last minute replaced it with the food category instead. So I'm excited to see what space question we'll get next time. slight_smile I don't know much about it but space is always interesting!!

Sorry you didn`t do so well this week @Marjo

The idea for the gelatin question came about over last weekend when I read fish bladders have been removed from Guiness. Had you voted for Space instead of food and drink then Space would have been the category.

As to the Space question, I`m going to be checking through the questions for the eight categories over the weekend. I do have two questions in mind for Space - one is fairly easy, the other is "sneaky", so I`ll have to have a think...

Guinness and fish bladders, explains the use of the expression "I'm bladdered!" when 3 sheets to the wind on Guinness LOL

Isinglass is commonly used to help remove cloudiness (to clear) from home-made wine wink (if anyone's interested)

You must have a damn good source for that tree question @Mi-Amigo ...Since the answers were given I've looked and looked again and can find no mention of the damn thing joy

PS not doubting you were correct, so please don't think that. I'm just saying the fact that all of us got it wrong proves how hard it was Confused

@Cleoriff

I don`t mind in the least you asking about the source for the tree question.

As most of you know, I have a very large library of old and also obscure books, which I use for the Quizzes. On occasions, I do make online searches - never Wiki - and always cross-check the source.

As to the tree question.

Measuring the felled eucalptus tree is in an old edition of Guiness Book of Records [pre-name change to Guiness World Records].

As this was also mentioned in a QI General Ignorance book. I looked for sources and found, what I think and regard as reliable - the Smithsonian Magazine [connected to the US Smithsonian Institute] which states:

Eucalyptus. The tree Down Under, the eucalyptus includes 700 species mostly endemic to Australia.

... in their native lands, eucalyptus are honorable kings. They provide essential habitat and food for the koala, for one, and are regarded highly for the medicinal and aromatic uses of its oils, often used in hand lotions and soaps.

And there is a less recognized fact about eucalyptus trees–that they grow tall, super tall, taller than most of the biggest-tree-contenders in the world, taller, perhaps, than any other species. You ready? Drum roll please: The tallest eucalyptus ever, at Watts River, Victoria, was just shy of 500 feet.

I hope this helps explain where the answer came from.

I apologise to you and everyone who found this the hardest question ever posted.

[to be honest, I thought the man who built and flew the first airplane was the hardest question I ever set]

The quiz is meant to be fun, not to scramble your brains - especially given the talent the members have shown at beating some of the top quizzers - and hope it hasn`t put anyone off joining in next week...

IMO there are no hard or easy questions. You either know the answer, or you don't and in this case, we didn't wink

I appreciate that @MI5

I would add, though, that when I used to be in a pub team, we might think a question we knew the answer to was "easy" which we thought other teams might find "hard".

I have no problem with any of the questions @Mi-Amigo  so no need for apologies. I was simply pointing out the tree question (from my perpective) was the hardest ever.

The fact no-one got it correct confirms that. rofl
