Hi   .  we had a small beach hut by the sea. Of the 19 in a row Only 3 stand, after a fire.  We rescued our stuff  but they are smelling of smoke and some stains. Umbrella and shade, 2 folding chairs (no cushions) All are living in the garden, sprayed with household cleaner.

Has anyone sadly had to deal with smoke damage.?   Any tips Thanks! .

Sorry to hear that Jenny.
All I can suggest is detergent and a power washer.

It depends on the degree of smoke which managed to get into your beach hut @Jenny105

Plenty of fresh air and Febreze might mask it. Anything that can be scrubbed or washed  might help, though I think you may have to live with it. It will diminish in time hopefully.

I think it's time to treat yourself to new chairs etc @Jenny105 as it's almost impossible to get rid of the smell once it's saturated into the material.

....you could always have a fire sale Whistle

If you can afford it @Jenny105 buying new stuff isn't a bad idea at this time of the year.

ALL the major outlets are having sales on garden type equipment wink

Some of the particles might be toxic, so better get new stuff.

For example if a fire destroys a supermarket EVERYTHING has to be thrown away (at least here in Germany). Could be a bit overreacting, but you never know...

And as Cleoriff said, there are good offers at this time of year.

Thanks for the replies and encouragement.

Foortunately the fire service didnt forbid us from taking items away,  Most of the huts near ours were wood, metal with some cotton filling in the loungers so the smoke wasnt deemed toxic.

We haved saved the existing items  by doing the following

  • They lived outside for a week , left fully open
  • 'Astonish' spray for grease and for fabric  x 3 times daly . The sprays were found by chance in Office Outlet store

So hopefully we can enjoy them in garden or beach this summer

Pleased that appeared to work @Jenny105. Laying them open in the fresh air was the best idea.
