With the announcement of Sony's latest smartphone Xperia Z at the CES 2013 - A debatable question has made me a bit curious and I'm wondering what do you peeps think?

According to sources, "about one in 10 people had dropped their phone down a toilet at some point" - well, I definitely haven't (till now :)) however, should all handsets be water-resistant?

I don't see why not it can't make all that much difference to the cost.

in note that the Z has port covers to comply with its ip rating and they must be closed or warranty is invalidated (in your other thread abs)

Imagine the complaints when it goes in for repair and gets rejected for "water damage".

Though another aspect few think about is the amount of germs that reside on a phone. I remember LG put out a netbook a while back that had this special coating that prevented the spread of "stuff". Not sure how many phones have that coating applied.

The phone companies will not do as they will end up out of pocket and I am not talking about making the phones water resistant I am talking about all the replacement phones that they lose out on.

This would also impact on phone repairers were I guess a high percentage would be repairs from water damage.

All portable devices that contain potentially valuable user data should have a minimum level of resilience to the elements and "predictable" damage because it's often very difficult if not actually impossiible for consumers to wipe data that is not on removable storage when a device is damaged.   A "kite mark" or CE rating should be applied to the build quality and at least water-resistance would seem to be a bare minimum - full-on water-proofing is rather more specialist and expensive for most people.

In an ideal world... yes!

In the real world... can't see it ever happening - for the reasons that people have posted above.

And (ahem) I am 1 out of those 10 people who has dropped their phone in the toilet slight_frown before it was used I would like to add!!!

Amazingly enough the hand dryer in the toilets fixed the phone and it still works Smiley Very Happy

They have developed a hydrophobic coating which would be great to use on pcbs. Should stop the majority of damage without needing to seal the handset.

However it's expensive at the moment:(

I've unfortunatly introduced my phone and toilet twice so I guess I took your turn abs the second time:D

If I'm honest the second time was after brushing my teeth and I was checking the traffic on my phone went to put it into my pocket and forget I didn't have any pockets on my jumper lol.
