Hey everyone,

Some interesting mobile news this week where secondary schools in the UK are beginning to ban mobile phones. The bans are not restricted to the classrooms with pupils expected to had in their phones in the morning and not getting them back until the end of the school day.

A study by Harvard Business Review found that even if a mobile is in your pocket it's still a distraction and those in the study who switched off their phones and left them in another room had “statistically significant” improvements in concentration and cognitive ability.

Latymer Upper school in west London has banned mobiles for all children up to the end of their GCSE year and have found the effect very positive with pupils playing outside and socialising with each other more then before!

What are your thoughts on banning mobiles during the entire school day? Do you think it's overkill or a good step forward?

Do you have any mobile bans at home such as during meal times? Let us know! wink

At first yes, but then they deemed it too time consuming to take it off 1250 students everyday so just ran an if you are caught with it you lose it policy @Martin-O2

@-Ben- yes that makes sense. It would be a hell of a lot of work collecting and storing all those phones each morning!

It's good to hear that there has been a positive response to this initiative:

Assistant head Matthew Chataway said: “It’s not a question of taking a device away from students, but rather giving them back time, the opportunity to try new activities and the chance to take a break from social media.”

I remember that we used to refer to young people as being the "PlayStation Generation", mainly because they weren't getting enough exercise, but nowadays that's probably the least of any parent's worries, as dependency on social media can potentially have an impact on mental health as well. Anything that might help to wean children off their addiction to smartphones can only be a positive step.

It's a good initiative but obviously not for mobile operators.
