Phone to replace Motorola E 2nd gen recommendation?

Hi all,

My eye has been off the mobile market for a while so am hoping you can help.

I managed to get my Mum using a smartphone after we had the Hive thermostat installed so she could use the app.

I ended up buying her a Moto E 2nd gen as she complains that most smartphones are too big.

I bought it SIM free and set it up for her and regularly make sure the apps are updated every couple of months.

Now the last official firmware release was December 2016 when it was updated to Marshmallow then Lenovo appear to have completely stopped providing security updates.

She says she seems to have to charge it quite often but reception on any network round here isn't great so phones have to work quite hard.

I'd like to replace it for her for Christmas but I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to select.

Am really looking for something with a max 4.5 inch screen, I did look at the Nokia 1 but I know this runs a cutdown version of Android which I'd rather avoid as don't want to run into any issues with apps she uses or might want to install.

Any suggestions?

Moto G5 springs to mind although it has a 5" display, it isn't too big to hold comfortably.
I'm not sure there are too many with sub 5" screens these days ?

The Nokia one wouldn't have problems as it gets updated by Google if it's an android one and hmd global are known to be good at updating
