May I say, I agree with all which has been said by @Cleoriff & @Glory1 in their above posts
Yes, Sir David Attenborough is ... what can you say about this marvellous man ?
I remember seeing him on tv when he was in a cave populated by bats ... & ... those iconic pictures of him with the gorillas who were 'making him one of their own 'family'

I was so shocked when read it during holiday... Many talked about it in the bar. Glad the sapeur pompiers are a really good company and just did it right (not like Mr Trumpleton suggested bombing water on it....).
Trivia: Did anyone (except @EmilieT as she is French :P) know the Parisian (and Marseille) Fire Depts are actually soldiers and part of the Army? Talked to a Firefighter from there just some days before it happened. Very interesting ^^

Well I certainly didn't know that the Parisien and Marseille fire fighters are army men. Rather odd rarher than interesting I would have said. But maybe that's just me. I can understand the army helping out in a major disaster but not being the actual firemen.

The weirdest thing is, they can work 48 hour shifts (as it's Army the EU rules aren't in place)... And they come together and sing the national anthem... I doubt many of our firefighters even know ours in full...

Yes, I'd heard of this @ComaChameleon ... the retiring firefighter on the scene at the horrific demise of Diana, Princess of Wales ... has explained he now is able to say things which at the time he could not as technically he was a member of the Army

Yes, in such situations they have to not speak about it. Same with our Army - sadly.
They have to pass a daily fitness test. My brother (who is professional Firefighter here) said he would not pass (He hates chin-ups)

That goes some way to explaining why the firemen are army rather than just actual firemen; those 48 hour shifts. Bet they're paid less than trained fire fighters whose only job is to put out fires too.
Nice they can get together and sing their national anthem but that's not the point really. Sorry but I just think it's wrong!!

I don't think they earn less. As they ARE trained Firefighters. It's just the command-structure which is military.
And sure... If a war happens (we won't wish that) they would MAYBE have to go to war. But I doubt as you still have to protect the city from fires..
