The Daily Mail is currently running a story which is telling how Kirsty Allsopp (of TV fame) has been outraged because her mother in law has been refused a mobile phone contract as she has NO credit rating.

This 81 year old lady...who runs her own antiques business...has never paid for anything via direct debit.

Apparently she pays cash for everything and has never been in debt.

However the application for a contract was refused because the company could not find ANY credit rating on her

So beware..... It isn't only those who have a BAD credit rating

Apparently you can be debt free...pay everything on time....run your own business.....BUT...if you have no credit rating on file....you can be refused a contract for £30 a month...

A sign of the times...but farcical nonetheless?

Everything done in cash so HMRC, can't see what takings are!

First thing that came into my mind.....but there again I love a good conspiracy theory

There's just "something" about this story that seems off.
Dunno what or how, but a woman that age, supposedly owning a business, on the electoral roll, has never had so much as a BT landline?
Something off.

There's nothing in the article about her being on the electoral roll or not. It's possible, and indeed probable, that her landline has been there since long before credit checks were necessary.

Have to say Viridis....I certainly didn't have to have credit checks all those years ago when I bought my landline

(or much else for that matter.):smileywink:

As for getting a mortgage...well my other half was still in an apprenticeship when we went for ours...I was NOT to be considered...until I told them I was a nurse. Suddenly I was a 'professional person' and WAS considered... However no credit checks in place then either.....

Oh the joys of 'back in the day'....
