"Young people 'feel they have nothing to live for'"

This is simply awful.

So much life ahead of these youngsters and this is how some feel.

I take surveys like this with a cross section of some 2000 youngsters with a pinch of salt.

But it is certainly a different world in which I grew up.

I must admit BoB I have a lot of friends who have felt very down about their futures.

Jonsie, you raise a very interesting point. I know a lot of people argue that modern life is very easy compared how life was say, 50 years ago, but the on the other side of that coin you could argue that there is more competition and social pressure now than ever before.

I'm not sure if I agree with that 100% personally, but its interesting to ponder.

I think you mean 'jonsie' , Toby. Lol.

I agree the world has changed and society has too.

I also think that because the art of talking is somewhat lost in the younger generation with text messaging and social media I feel some bottle things up and it gets on top of them.

It's a generic view expressed by some but written as if it was many.

Every person is an individual with their own circumstances.

I'm young-ish and there's many who have not had experiences that I've had (my doctor has shown me statistics) so yes I feel down sometimes but everyone does at some point. There's always something to live for, even if you can't see it right away

You're right of course and these media reports about the feelings of the young in society have been published on a regular basis for as long as I can remember.

It's the publicity at times that causes them to feel like this and I'm convinced that a more positive view on what life holds for them would help reduce these feelings.

People tend to believe what they hear in the news and publicising articles like this as if it was some new revelation is simply continuing this fallacy!

Publishing this here serves no useful purpose at all.

It's common that stories are being exaggerated to make it look more interesting and to get attention. It's happened for years and it'll always happen.

The same can be said for lots of stories in the media no matter what the subject is. Sensationalism sells !

One of the reasons why most forums have 'off topic' sections is to allow discussion not connected to the main forum subject matter.

If it helps one person to realise communicating is the key then it's done its job.

Articles like this highlighted to me that such issues exist and helped me deal with my teenage daughter when she had a breakdown and had suicidal thoughts and now is recovering through help groups.

She felt the way described in the recent report and thought she couldn't open up.
