After eight years on O2's PAYG "Classic" tariff it's time to move on. I've been using Smarty as a secondary SIM for a while now and their offering suits my current usage much better, so I've finally ported my main number to it. The Classic tariff with its "only pay for what you use" approach was ideal when my usage was extremely low and I would have loved to retain it for use as my secondary. I gather that it's not possible to keep an account after porting the number though, and sadly the Classic tariff is no longer available, so it's the end of the line.
Thank you to all who have provided help and advice over the years.

To be honest @Exazet the smarty service is one of the best out there for what you pay, and like most Virtual Networks offer much more value than o2 or any legacy carrier can do to match service or pricing..
I like Spusu and Mozillion at the moment, lightning fast speeds and excellent customer services but I have a 50Gb for 6mths from Lebara as well for the princely sum of 42p yes 42p a month...
Enjoy Smarty

I don't really know anything about the way the networks and MVNOs operate. I get that separate MVNOs (e.g. Giffgaff?) can have lower overheads because they don't have to look after the infrastructure. They presumably have to buy bandwidth from the networks though, and AIUI Smarty is actually part of the Three company. It's not obvious to me why the virtuals are inherently capable of lower prices and/or better service, but I don't doubt that you're right.
I hadn't even heard of the others you mention - just shows how much attention I've been paying! I'll make a mental note to research the options if Smarty is culled following the Vodafone takeover of Three. I very rarely make calls or send texts so the "only pay what you use" of Classic PAYG was ideal for me. That only changed because I've started travelling quite a bit so mobile data much more important than it used to be.
