Has anybody else received a screen message saying that your phone has been blocked and it can only be unlocked for £100.  This is very scary.  Can it happen or is it just a scam.

It was a scam on iPhones last year where the iCloud accounts had been hacked and the message was posted using the lost phone facility.
I posted a thread on here about it somewhere.
