I would suggest that the designers of a Bugatti or a Ferrari earn far more than designers of a Kia or Ssangyong so the basic design costs are different

That's what I meant by pound for pound.
Design, development and manufacturing costs (for the same process) are identical and all of those processes will be done by a 3rd party like us (we don't charge VW anything different to Jaguar or BMW).
Yes, there is a price difference between sheet metal and carbon fibre, but not as much as you might think and apart from more parts in the "luxury" cars, the purchasing cost of those parts is a level playing field.
Put it another way, it doesn't cost £95,000 to build a Porsche 911.

So what you're saying is that the percentage cost of production is more or less the same.
So the cost of production of a Bugatti Chiron is, say, 15% of it selling price which is more or less the same as a Rolls, Ferrari, VW, BMW, Kia, Ssangyong etc etc

Yes, sort of. There are a large number of fixed costs which will be the same for every car, then there will be the flexible costs that vary from car to car, but when added together the selling price isn't linear.

I take the point about the car comparison cost for cost. For me though it's appearance and prestige. A HDMI cable costing £1.99 does the same job as one costing £3,000....and more importantly, who the hell sees the HDMI cable. ). Now ....if you want me to chose between a Bugati Veyron or a Fiat on my drive...There is no contest...

Better I think. I have so many vinyl LPs and as retro as they may be...I can't stand the snap crackle and hiss when they are playing......Dance

My hubby was DJ in his spare time and I can assure you he never carried any vinyl to the gigs....
