Thanks for the tip @Bambino.
Going back before the days of smartphones I paid $20 for a licence for Google Earth Pro. This gave me the facility to connect a GPS and use it as a moving map display on a laptop. I did need to cache a fair amount of data to use if off-line though. How technology has advanced in the last 8 years!
