Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but as it has been making headline news today and yesterday I thought it imperative to post a warning here.
There is news from the US that a particularly destructive virus has been set up by a team of hackers.
Its called Gameover Zeus. Particularly virulent. Hacks into personal info taking bank detals and is holding computer users to ransom to regain the info taken from them
The US, FBI and National crime agency have closed down the site for NOW....however they say it could be up and running again in two weeks.
A timely reminder to back up files, install further computer protection and hope for the best. It is felt that at least 15,000 users have already been infected in the UK
A far more in depth report is explained here.....
EDIT: If @Toby feels this is better placed in Off Topic....please feel free to move it

Hi @Toby we personally use Bitdefender and Malwarebytes. However a recent recommendation courtesy of Browni... is this one ...to be added to whatever else you may have....
Edit. Link removed
There is a free version, but also a one off payment $11.95, gives you protection for life to all PC's in your household
EDIT: The link wont work on HERE so I suggest you go into the Cryptoprevent website for the link (its because it is written as Foolish IT...but as one word!!)

We use AVG, the paid for version as I worry about the free one not having enough security for banking.
This might be a silly question, but should I be using anything on my iPhone and iPad and, if so, do you have any recommendations?
Hi @Anonymous . In answer to that I have absolutely no idea. I thought about the possibililty of the virus affecting other devices, but the article was talking primarily about PC's?
Perhaps one of our more technically minded users may be able to answer this question?

I'm using Norton and it's nowhere the resource hog that it used to once be, but I also use malwarebytes for the occasional scan and a Kaspersky Rescue Disk scan from bootable CD from time to time especially for USB sticks after using it in an unverified clean PC.
Another good tool is SandboxIE which creates a 'Sandbox' around any browser, or your mail client or any other program so any infection remains within the sandbox and can be removed just by deleting the sandbox.
Of course safe practise is the best defence.

Hi guys....
During the course of today I have been asked many times, if this 'Gameover Zeus' will affect Tablets and
Smartphones?
I feel slightly lost that I am unable to give a correct reply? My husband feels if you are only accessing emails
via phones and tablets, then there could be a risk...
Although it has been on the news again this afternoon, nothing was mentioned other than PC's
Is anyone able to give more more advice please?
