An interesting article here : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-28214646
In 1998, Chris Wysopal and friends discovered a way to shut down the internet. With just 30 minutes of work they believed they could do enough damage to stop the world wide network operating for a couple of days. They told people about what they found but not in a chat channel or discussion forum. They did it in a much more public place. In the US Senate, in fact. In front of its Committee on Governmental Affairs.

Goes to show how clever these guys are.
Scary. 😄
The majority of "hackers" aren't this smart and in fact are just scipt kiddies that run scripts written by someone else to achieve something like a denial of service attack.
A good movie for the younger members of the community to see just how hacking started out is War Games starring a young Mathew Broderick. Its a classic!
