This gives us all an hour extra in bed.
It's also the start of dark mornings and dark nights!

The capitalist system.
Our medieval ancestors were not expected to work in the dark. Tradesman were fined by their guild if they did.
And on another note, medieval peasants had far more holidays than their modern counterparts.
