Excellent news relating to testing for Downs Syndrome in pregnant women.
This research was undertaken at Great Ormond Street Hospital. They have developed a blood test for the mother to be, which identifies DNA of her unborn child. This can be tested for genetic disorders including Downs
Currently the UK only uses amniocentesis for definitive testing. This poses a risk to the unborn child. One in every 200 women lose their baby after this invasive test.
This is such a major breakthrough and can only improve care we give to pregnant women
