The BBC have announced that two patients in the UK have been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

No further details have been given other than they are both members of the same family and are receiving specialist NHS care.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-51325192

At present, 83 Britons and 27 foreign nationals are flying back to the UK from Wuhan, the Chinese city at the centre of the outbreak.

The flight is due to land at RAF Brize Norton at 13:30 GMT.

The UK passengers will then be taken to Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral and quarantined for two weeks.

The speed in which it spreads, is more than concerning. I notice no-one is reporting if it will affect those who have had x amount of vaccinations. If it does, what level of illness are we to expect?

The doctor in South Africa who spotted it had quite a lot to say on the Marr show today - and the work to find out how it interacts with the vaccine is on-flight, @Cleoriff.

Yes, I've had an opportunity to catch up on it now @pgn. Apparently South Africa is not at all pleased about the ban on travel. 🙄

Damn right - if you do the right thing and alert the authorities, why should you be punished? Such punitive actions do not encourage the open and honest sharing of required information to help stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

I don't think we do have open and honest sharing of info @pgn. I'm sure there are some countries who go to great pains to hide the true number of Covid cases. I'm not sure I agree with your other comment either. When other variants were found, the government were heavily criticised for NOT closing the borders. It's a case of being damned if you do and double damned if you don't. " Mummy Mummy there's a big bad wolf at the door....That's ok darling, open the door and let him in...

I'm  sorry but until scientists find out exactly the effect this more virulent strain has on our residents who have been vaccinated, then I think we do our best to carry on 'fire fighting' and keeping the wolf from the door.

Yes, @Cleoriff - The race to drop distancing, and masks, and basic cleanliness measures has not helped. I remember being supportive of immediate travel bans to reduce spread - but that really hammers so many other things... I expect oil prices will drop again on the back of another ban on air travel this time as well

The scientists need time, the governments of all nations need to cooperate to give the scientists that time, not put measures in place that they themselves can circumvent at will.

And most of all, the medical aspect - hospitals, nurses, care staff, front-line personnel deserve to be able to do their jobs in safety (adequate PPE) and to the best of their abilities without being worked to a frazzle and burning out.

Oh, and reporting - it should be standardised, and removed from political control - figure-fudging is not helping the public to understand the situation so they can keep safe.

I know it impacts other things @pgn  but so does Brexit. Sadly nowadays we can't seem to separate one from the other. How unfortunate that they both came like unwelcome gifts, at the same time!!

As for reporting, I said way back in this thread that it should be standardised. Getting the super powers to agree to this is another matter. This SHOULD be the remit of the WHO.

While I'm on a rant, let's talk about the immigrants who are living in terrible camps in Calais (and the French seem to be getting away with that scot free) and then dying in British waters when they try to get here. Why here? Why can't the French accommodate some of these poor souls? Add to that, the insult of OUR Home secretary NOT being invited to discuss the way forward. How bloody dare they??!!

Only since we had that terrible death toll in the channel last week, are the French Police doing anything to stop the travel across the channel. Too damn little, too damn late! This is human life we are talking about and the French are happy to allow these poor souls to live in absolute squalor!

I say it's nothing to do with Covid but who tests them whilst they are on French shores? Rant over!!!
