Hey everyone,
The Royal Observatory Greenwich has just announced the winners of their annual Astronomy Photographer competition. There were over 4,000 entries and some truly stunning images which made judging the competition extremely difficult!
The overall winner was taken by Hungarian photographer László Francsics for this stunning photo "Into the Shadow" which depicts 35 phases of a total lunar eclipse!
There were many categories for the competition including the moon, from which the overall winner was selected.
I've shared the winner of each category below but there are hundreds of other shortlist images over on the Astronomy Photographer website so check them out and let me know what your favourites are!
Best Newcomer (Joint Winner)

Wonderful photos unbelievable and I agree with @Mi-Amigo
Viridis has some fantastic photos.
Mine won't be in as I could just get a white dot in the sky which was supposed to be
a new moon @Martin-O2
but ~ there may be a chance for me next time, will have to improve my phone though

The Planets Comets and Asteroids section look too good to be true if honest.

Agreed @Mi-Amigo that image certainly could have won the comp!
You should keep at it @TallTrees you'll only get better with practice.
@JAZZ-trad did you have a favourite out of the Aurorae pictures?
I would have been useless as a judge on this @Cleoriff, I'd want to pick them all as joint winner!
I'm always amazed at pictures of the sun @jonsie. Especially the close up detailed ones that show the structure of the surface.
