I was considering buying a spare lightning cable so that I can charge my phone at work.  When I looked on the Apple site I came across the perfect thing - a keychain.

It looks great and ideal, however when I have read reviews online, I have found that, although it is useful, people are saying that it is not worth the money.

It is not an Apple product and therefore it is not covered by the usual Apple warranty so that puts me off it a bit.

Does anyone have one of these? Or can you recommend anything similar?

As I've said earlier it would be interesting what Apple would do.

The info is clear on the apple website and not so clear from the advice given to me and Adam.

I know what your "trying to get across"@MI5 wink

I agree @MI5 but as you can see the advice given to Adam is contradicted by advice given to me from the same source.

I don't read your transcript any differently to Adam's.

It states your device will be covered by warranty unless there is any phsical damage ie you rammed the charger in wrong (same for any manufacturer)....

Ok we'll agree to disagree slight_smile

Physical damage could be interpreted as damage inside from being fried.

Proof will be in the pudding if it ever happens.

Let's not let this spiral.

Been an interesting conversation @gemz4the1

Have fun choosing.

Me too what about all the sound docks out there that charge the phone none of them are made by apple but are all perfectly fine and are sold in apple shops the likes of Bose and such which are quality brands they wouldn't be allowed to sell them if they were not tested to work

The thing I am wary about is the stories in the news about iPhones and iPads being damaged (e.g. overheating and starting a fire) by using non-official products, such as a cable from a corner shop for £1.  I thought that cables bought from 'proper' shops were safer? The keychain I was looking at wasn't an official Apple product, yet Apple were selling it.  O2 and many other well-known stores sell non-Apple products so surely that would not be allowed if they were considered to be dangerous?

The cable in Maplin is £15 and not one of the cheap £1 cables so I'm hoping it would be safe to use.

The key wording is The (Made For I) MFI certification that I specificaly asked about of apple http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1665 the one on maplin complies but the £1 shop ones do not. It is your choice from the information provided also this apple page specifically about lightning http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5609
