hey there I currently have a contract out with o2 and I'm looking to upgrade is it possible to do it online ?

Yes, you can upgrade in your MyO2.

can I upgrade early and instead of paying off the rest bulk say 400 quid could you set it up as bigger monthly payments ? and a new phone as mine is broken

Sadly no. 
You need to pay off the old contract fee first.
