O2 staff have just confirmed to me that wifi calling is enabled on my O2 account but I don't think its working. there are times when I'm connected to wifi and I can't make an outgoing call. wifi calling is enabled on my phone, I've checked and double checked.
I use a samsung galaxy S8. I've also read conflicting reports about needing O2 firmware on the phone and others say you don't need O2 firmware, I just don't know what the truth is. I have searched on google about this but there's so much out-of-date stuff out there its confusing.
my question is: how can I know/verify at my end that the call I'm making is using wifi calling?

@tonjg wrote:I don't get that, I get this:
You need to be in airplane mode to test it that way.
Did you at least check the settings on your phone to ensure it's turned on?
You may need to reboot phone for settings to appear.

So if you don't have social media and you have struggled with the call centre I would suggest getting the community advisors on the case to check your account is set up correctly @tonjg
Can you see if you can sort out the issues @O2Ryan @Anonymous (or @O2Emma )?

at the end of the day I am informed that my phone will not support wifi calling because:
a) it does not have O2 firmware (mine is an unlocked samsung galaxy S8 phone)
b) it is too old to have O2 firmware put on it. (tbh I wouldn't want O2 firmware on my phone anyway)
I might have to migrate to another mobile provider if they can support wifi calling on my phone

This was a restriction on the first generation of phones that supported WiFi Calling, and to be honest you will probably find the same across all networks in the UK, as this was part of the carrier software issued by Samsung, and was a restriction added by the Networks before 3GPP ratification and adding tor the GSM Standards.
And to be fair o2 don't need to support an over 5 year old phone and one that is 4 Android Versions behind the current OS.
So I would do my due diligence into a network that would support it on such an old device. And also note to cancel your contract, then you would need to pay off any termination fees that are due..

solved: I flashed my phone with O2 firmware and now wifi calling is working - I'm getting the correct icon when I make a call, the line connects really quick and the audio is clear.
this video showed me how:

Yes it works for both incoming and outgoing, on my Flip 4, it doesn't show an icon for WiFi Calling when a call is inbound.
