Not anymore unfortunately.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Pixel 7a (O2 & Lyca), One Plus 6 (Sfr), iPhone 12 Pro Max (Vodafone)

Hi @Harold

As far as I know you can only read text messages using either your phone's data or using wifi, if you have a smartphone.

Welcome to the forum, by the way Welcome

You don't need an app to connect to Wi-Fi @Harold. Just go into your phone's settings and under connections turn Wi-Fi to on. Then you can use Wi-Fi wherever you are that has free wifi, like your hotel, a restaurant and many shops.

If using wifi turn data off.

Text messages cannot be sent or received over WiFi.
You'd need to use WhatsApp or other Messaging app to utilise WiFi.

Well I'm no tech wizard. But I sent a text message to my friend over WiFi, data switched off, and she just confirmed receipt. And it was SMS not Whatsapp. Or is it still using my phone's data even though I switched data off?

SMS uses the mobile network, not data of any sort, so will still send even with no data connection as long as you have a mobile signal.
