I am unable to make or receive phone calls. Have been using O2 for a number of year without problems.  This is my main line why has it stopped working as norm

C|heck this out as well Guide: How can I sort out my network issues? 

If everything is ok there, then maybe you need a new sim. Far quicker to pop into an O2 store and they can swap everything over for you.
