I have had a mobile contract with O2 for many years. It is a minimal basic contract (about £9 per month) as I am a very basic user.
However my new package with Virgin Media includes a free sim card "unlimited" which I would like to use as I then could make much better use of Mobile Data. I have received instructions to text swap to a particular number so that I can keep my mobile number.
My questions - do I now cancel by long running contract? Is there any advantage in keeping paying it?
- when exactly do I cancel? I expect the new sim card soon.
Thanks for any help/advice.

You need to contact O2 to MIGRATE your old number to the new contract.
This cancels your old one automatically.
Guide: Migration & porting into O2
If you message O2 on Facebook (https://o2uk.co/O2CFB) , Twitter (https://o2uk.co/O2CTW) or Instagram (https://o2uk.co/O2CIG) , they should be able to help you with this
Thanks

Thank you very much. The "cancels automatically" part of your reply relieves a lot of my concern.
